Severian retraces the dog Triskele's footsteps in the Citadel. He travels incognito with Roche, Drotte, and Eata, once his fellow apprentices, to the Inn of Lost Loves at the edge of the Sanguinary field. He quizzes the old waiter there who left the note for Dorcas about his past.

Severian is resolved to undergo the test. He understands he is not the first Severian, and an earlier Severian has taken the test. Those who wished to see him succeed travelled back through the corridors of time, which is an explanation, of sorts, for some of the strangeness.

More from me, on the Book of the New Sun as a whole and its ending in particular in the New Year.

He returns to Nessus in a position of honour, pausing to see (but not speak to) Dorcas on the way. He returns to the Guild of Torturers, speaks to Master Palaemon and some current prisoners, and makes the decision to disband the Guild.

Vodalus speak to Severian and is torn between his desire to reward Severian's loyalty and is promise to give Severian up to Agia. Vodalus wants the Autarch delivered to him, and reveals he doesn't know that the Autarch was his servant. Severian is forced to march with the army, and later meets the Autarch again, who relinquishes his life that he may be absorbed by Severian. Severian passes out from the strain of the absorption, and awakes in the clutches of Agia once again, who plans to kill him. However, the Green Man (a time traveller encoutered in Book 2) is there to rescue him. A flying ship arrives and Master Malrubius and his old dog Triskele step out to greet Severian.

Severian goes on his errand for the Pelerine priestess, meeting a hermit, who dwells in a house where the top stories are in the future - and it's an icy future for Urth, where no New Sun comes. So much for prophecy.

Trying to take the hermit out of his dwelling, Severian finds that he evaporates, coming from only a possible future rather than the future. So much for prophecy again.

Getting back, Severian finds the Pelerine camp and lazeret destroyed, with only Foila there, dying. He promises to share the stories told. Severian then runs into a mercenary unit and takes part in an initiation challenge, which he wins or subverts. The next chapter will reveal which.

There's a lot for me to think about in these chapters, but I'll let others talk first.

Severian continues to recover under the care of the Pelerines. He talks to his fellow patients, two of whom vie for a woman's affections by telling the best story with Severian as judge.

Severian decides, thanks to a turn of phrase, that the soldier he resurrected is Jonas - though the soldier believes neither this nor that he was resurrected.

He also tries to give the Claw back to the Pelerines, who believe neither that it is the Claw without the gemstone encasing it, nor that it has miraculous healing powers.

Further thoughts:

I don't think the soldier is Jonas. He wanted to come back when restored - but surely a restored Jonas would not be a being of flesh. Though who he is is a mystery.

I really like the Asians who can only speak by quoting from the texts. Orwell's Newspeak gone further. Also, geographically... the action is in South America, and Ascia is north of the equator. So it's potentially where the USA is, depending on how far north.

It is revealed that Baldanders is constantly growing, and Talos is a form of doctor homunculus. Baldanders is also performing gruesome experiments and alterations on the captive lake people.

There are also three aliens within, their spacecraft overhead. Baldanders has the jewel, Severian tries to claim it back, and Baldanders hurls it from a window claiming to despise its superstition. It flares with light - and a torch thrown from a window was the signal for the "army" to attack.

Severian, leaving Thrax, travels through the mountains and comes to an isolated house, looking for food. While there, he encounters Agia, who tries to kill him, but the house has fallen on tragedy, and it is attacked by an alzabo, who has consumed two members of the household. Holding their memories, it seeks to consume the rest.

Severian defends the household, but gets no help from them and he is forced to fight in the dark. It is a stalemate, and Severian agrees to let the alzabo leave, vowing not to hunt it nor remain to defend the household- a woman, a boy with the same name as him, and an old man.

Thoughts:

The alzabo really is nightmare fuel. The minds held within it. Sure, just the memories of those eaten, for a little while, distorted through the beast's instincts..right?

There's a revelation from Agia. Hethor was working for her, and the attacks on Severian by the salamander and the earlier notules were his doing. The sailors in the void know strange things.

And in case we were waiting for it, we come to another Severian moral failing. I was impressed when he chose to defend the family, but he didn't stick to it, in almost a fit of pique at nobody giving him a light.

[So, I lost my copy of the book. I bought it on Kindle. Then I found my copy of the book. Such is my life.]

Severian goes to the local ruler's party. He meets a woman, Cyriaca. They have intimate relations. He's a bit shifty in conversation with her about Dorcas, but otherwise she doesn't seem to trouble him. And in what is not altogether a surprise, Severian learns Cyriaca is the one he is to dispatch. He chooses not to do his job, to no longer consider himself a torturer, and sneaks away. He returns to the poor home with the sick person, and out of sight of others, sneaks in and uses the Claw to heal.

Thoughts...

(*) Severian's tryst is pretty seedy bearing in mind Dorcas' condition, but at least it's not another Jolenta situation. Ah, Severian, you've set a low bar.

(*) But Severian's first action, on deciding he's no longer a torturer, is to heal.

(*) It's interesting that Severian feels he's let the torturers down rather than feeling what he does is defective.

(*) The conversation with Cyriaca is interesting- the rise and fall of AI assistants, and some thoughts about the end of the previous book- but not at particularly illuminating to me.

And we're back! Severian is Lictor of Thrax. Dorcas goes missing in the city and when Severian finds her again she is unable or unwilling to speak. Meanwhile, trouble is stirring in Thrax, and the Archon is requests Severian's attendance at a gathering for the great and good of the city- though suggesting he is likely to have to work while there.

Some thoughts:

(*) Thrax is given an interesting description. It sounds like it's built into a hydroelectric dam.

(*) Severian's speech to Dorcas, justifying his profession, sounds more like he's trying to convince himself.

If I can forget some of his previous thoughts and actions, I feel I almost like Severian in these chapters. Based on the last time this happened, he's probably about to do something awful.

Jolenta dies over the course of these final chapters. Severian commands an animal with the Claw, heals a farmer's son with the Claw, and leaves in haste as the farmer doesn't like him. Severian and Dorcas come to a ruined city, and meet two witches, along with Hildegrin, and witness a parade of ghosts.

This was oddly hard to summarise, and I'm sure I've missed something important.

We take a break next week as we're at the end of book two. On the 14th August we'll be ready to discuss the first four chapters of book three.

Then the play is described. Then Baldanders attacks the disguised aliens in the audience, and chaos descends.

Thoughts: The Jolenta elopement was extremely uncomfortable reading. Jolenta herself seems ruined by Dr. Talos' treatments, physically and mentally.

I didn't get anything out of the plot of the play, but did find it fun tracking who was in which role (it's actually pretty clear from the voice) and the quick changes giving the performers a chance to shift costume. We also learned that the sun is presumed dying because of a black hole introduced into its heart.

It's absolutely confirmed that Severian met the Autarch.

Severian finds Dorcas, Dr. Talos, Baldanders, and Jolenta, having been seperated from them after Baldanders' attack. Dr. Talos makes sure Severian is paid for his part in the play, fearful that he has powerful friends. Baldanders refuses to be alone with Severian so he can attempt to heal him with the Claw. Baldanders and Dr.Talos wish to depart alone, and they beat and threaten to kill Jolenta, who wants to go with them. Severian, Dorcas, and Jolenta take the road to Thrax.

Severian is then tempted by an undine, a giant who lives in the water, and hints are made of connections to Baldanders, He comes back when Dorcas calls him- Jolenta was bitten by a blood bat.

One thought really here: Dorcas. She's more alive than before, and acting as Severian's conscience. For example, without her, he'd have freely abandoned Jolenta.

Severian and Jonas eat a special meal with Vodalus, which involves taking a drug from an alien creature, the alzebo, and consuming the flesh of Thecla. Jonas manages to hide the fact he does not partake, but Severian, due to the drug and ritual, absorbs Thecla's memories. And thanks to his peculiar memory, they're not going to fade.

Vodalus gives Severian the job of delivering a message to a servant in House Absolute, and Severian and Jonas head north on destriers provided. They are attacked by a flying shadow creature, the notule; Severian tricks the creature to attack and kill a nearby soldier instead.

Quick thoughts:

(*) I laughed out loud at the reveal that the destrier that Severian stole to go to the cave belonged to Vodalus.

(*) It's revealed in passing that one of the many things Severian is trying to accomplish is find Dorcas again. Something he mentioned to Jonas. So that's something.

We're back!

There's a gap in the narrative after the ruckus passing through the wall, and Severian is separated from Dorcas and his other chance companions, but is still accompanied by Jonas. He is in the nearby town of Saltus, and employed by the town elders to practice his profession- he is ready to execute two people, one accused of being a servant of the bandit Vodalus. The bandit was sealed in his house, and is dragged from it by a mob after it was battered in for access. Severian catches a glimpse of Agia.

Severian searches for Agia at the town fair. He doesn't find her, but comes across a tent containing a green man- who Severian pays to speak to. The green man is from the future, and chained up. Severian talks to him, and believes he learns that the sun will become brighter in the future. Severian gives the green man the means to free himself.

Some thoughts:

() The Cathedral of the Pelerines. It was made of silk, and with the bottom lit soared into the sky, like a paper cone. And it sounds like this is by design.
() Severian seems remarkably unconcerned about losing Dorcas.
(*) The photosynthetic Green Man is nifty. I wonder why he travelled back in time. Anyway, that was the point where I started fully engaging with the book- the gap in the narrative, though I knew it was there, threw me.
